Aster novi-belgii
New York Aster
Description
Aster novi-belgii, or New York Aster, is a sturdy, clump-forming perennial with lance-shaped leaves and rings of purple or pink flowers surrounding yellow disc centers. It typically produces more blooms than New England Aster. New York Aster thrives in moist, well-drained soils and full to part sun. The plant typically appears in colonies due to its spreading by long rhizomes. Its native habitats include shorelines, damp thickets, marshes, and meadows. This aster hosts caterpillars of several different moths.
Aster novi-belgii is also known as Symphyotrichum novi-belgii.
