Clematis virginiana
Virgin's Bower
Description
Clematis virginiana, or Virgin’s Bower, is a beautiful native vine with white flowers that twine by twisting leaf stalks around vertical supports. Without support, the vine will sprawl along the ground, creating a dense groundcover. Virgin’s Bower produces fragrant blooms in late summer from July to September. Virgin’s Bower grows best in well-drained medium to wet soils in full sun or part shade. It thrives where it can scramble on the ground and over shrubs, or along fences, trellises, arbors, or posts. Virgin’s Bower typically occurs in meadows, floodplains, riverbanks, open woods, and other moist areas.
Clematis virginiana is also commonly known as Devil’s Darning Needles, Old Man’s Beard, or Woodbine.
