Description
Hypoxis hirsuta, or Yellow Star Grass, is a one-foot, perennial wildflower found in dry to wet-mesic soils and full to part sun. Yellow Star Grass features tufted, grass-like leaves and yellow, star-shaped flowers that appear in mid-spring to early summer. The flowers produce a mild floral fragrance. When the flowers of Yellow Star Grass are almost closed, the plant seems green as only the outside of the petals are displayed. The flowers attract small bees primarily, including Little Carpenter bees, Mason bees, and Halictid bees, as well as Syrphid flies and beetles, desiring their pollen.
