Description
Sorghastrum nutans, or Indian Grass, is a 4-6 foot tall, clump-forming, warm-season grass native to North America. Indiangrass blooms from late summer to early fall and is composed of flowers with yellow stamens and silky, soft, bronze seed heads. In winter, the leaves and seeds develop an amber color. The plant is perfect for moist to dry soils and part to full sun. Indian Grass is very attractive and looks great with taller wildflowers. The grass is ideal for prairies, meadows, the edge of woods and dry slopes for erosion control. Sorghastrum nutans provides seed, cover and nesting sites for birds and pollen for bees. It is the also larval host to the pepper-and-salt skipper butterfly.
Sorghastrum nutans is also commonly known as Yellow Indiangrass.
