Spigelia marilandica
Woodland Indian Pink
$8.50
Description
Spigelia marilandica, or Woodland Indian Pink, is a one foot, striking, woodland perennial with crimson and light yellow interior blooms in summer. Woodland Indian Pink prefers part sun to light shade in moist rich woods. The perennial forms a good ground cover when grown in masses in the border or wild garden. We recommend keeping it away from other aggressive plants, as it can be easily overcome by fast-growing invasive species. The plant was historically used the Cherokee and the Creek to treat worms. However, it’s important to note the plant contains alkaloid spigiline, an active medical component, but it is poisonous to humans. Woodland Indian Pink is pollinated by hummingbirds.
Spigelia marilandica is also known as Pinkroot or Woodland Pinkroot.
